Extra! Extra! Read all about it.

A friend and former collegue of mine shared this with me this morning. In recounting his experiences as a kid who had a traveling parent, John explained how his dad made him feel like a part of the trip. Says John:

"Our deal was that he would bring me back a newspaper from each city he went to, and we'd each skim through the paper and chat about any interesting story about that part of the country. I think it worked for both of us, because it kind of included me in the trip."

Thanks for the tip. I'll be sending some books as a "thank you" on behalf of traveling parents everywhere.

My kids are older now and one is away at college. We send photos with text messages attached-- kind of like realtime post cards to each other. I always find an iconic subject or scene to send when I'm in a different city-- like the Chicago River dyed green when I was there for a conference around St. Patricks Day. My son who goes to college in California sent me a photo note from Malibu on a recent wintry day here in New York.

When they were young, I did a lot of international travel and came home with books from the countries I visited. There are a surprising number of local children's books translated into English, even in non-English language countries such as Russia, Malaysia, Japan, China and most European countries-- India too-- that aren't available in the US. Not soo many books in Dubai.... It was fun to read these aloud when I returned, especially the simpler ones that we could read in the original language. It gave me the chance to provide some "I was there" commentary, maybe describing what it was like to eat foods that are mentioned in the book or tell about visiting locations where the story takes place.
